Carrie-Anne Moss is a dynamic actress with an impressive resume who first skyrocketed to stardom in the ’90s sci-fi blockbuster extravaganza The Matrix. She would go on to star in all four of the Matrix franchise’s thrilling philosophical installments alongside Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, a role that would lead to an array of exciting career opportunities and roles. From portraying the wife of Victor Frankenstein to a determined FBI Special Agent, and even a suburban housewife with a zombie servant, Moss is not afraid to take on unique characters.

9/9 Elephant Song

Charles Binamé directed the 2014 Canadian drama Elephant Song, which centers on a renowned psychiatrist working in an asylum who finds himself in a cat-and-mouse game with a dangerous patient after one of his colleague’s disappears; Dr. Greene (Bruce Greenwood) must race against time to find out if the disturbed young man is truly to blame.

In the gripping picture, Carrie-Anne Moss portrays Greene’s wife Olivia, who causes more problems for the stressed out doctor as tensions in their marriage continue mounting. Elephant Song premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival where it earned positive reviews, with the drama winning Best Adapted Screenplay at the Canadian Screen Award.

8/9 Disturbia

Shia LaBeouf became a certified cinema star when he headlined the 2007 neo-noir psychological thriller Disturbia, drawing inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film Rear Window that follows a troubled teenager as he begins to wonder whether his next-door-neighbor is a serial killer. LaBeouf portrays Kale Brecht, a headstrong young man who is struggling with the sudden death of his father and is stuck under house arrest after striking his high school teacher.

Moss is compelling as Kale’s grieving mother Julie, as she attempts to keep her son in check despite his growing animosity and anger. Disturbia was a knockout with both audiences and critics, earning over $118 million at the box office and establishing LaBeouf as a sensational leading man.

7/9 Fido

Andrew Currie directed the delightfully zany 2006 zombie comedy Fido, telling the hilarious story of an alternate 1950s world where people have a zombie to help do menial chores after space radiation turns the deceased into the walking undead.

Carrie-Ann Moss delivers a scene-stealing performance as suburban housewife Helen Robinson, who buys the eponymous zombie (Billy Connoly) in spite of her husband being terrified by the creatures; things get dicey when Fido’s control collar malfunctions, and he goes on a human buffet bender. In their glowing review of the flick, the Boston Globe wrote, “The movie’s breezy, blood-flecked entertainment, with no aim other than to give you a giggle and a shriek.”

6/9 Frankenstein

A modern-day retelling of the beloved Mary Shelley masterpiece, 2015’s Frankenstein stars Xavier Samuel as Adam, the titular monster who is created by the brilliant scientist Victor Frankenstein (Danny Huston) and his wife Elizabeth (Carrie-Anne Moss) and goes on a journey of exploration as he navigates the many dark facets of humanity after escaping their euthanizing attempt.

Told through the perspective of Adam while chronicling his growing anger and violent tendencies, the horror thriller garnered a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, with Dread Central writing, “Melodramatic at turns, Bernard Rose’s Frankenstein is nonetheless a remarkably affecting piece of filmmaking sporting some wince-inducing gore and extreme violence.”

5/9 Wisting

Carrie-Anne Moss appears alongside Sven Nordin and Mads Ousdal in the critically-acclaimed Norwegian series Wisting, in which the decorated actress portrays FBI Special Agent Maggie Griffin, who is sent to Norway to help catch a notorious American serial killer who has been on the run for over two decades. The thrilling program is adapted from crime fiction author Jørn Lier Horst’s popular detective novels, earning widespread praise for its riveting storytelling and faithfulness to the subject source. The program has released three lauded seasons so far and has been deemed “the best Nord-noir ever,” a highly-anticipated fourth season is currently in the works.

4/9 Jessica Jones

Krysten Ritter brilliantly portrayed the eponymous private investigator in the Netflix original series Jessica Jones, which follows the Marvel Comics character and ex-superhero as she takes on cases involving gifted people with special abilities while struggling with PTSD.

Co-starring Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor and Wil Traval, the program ran for three successful seasons and won numerous accolades including a Peabody Award and Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award. Moss appeared in the gritty show as Jones’ ally and revered attorney Jeri Hogarth, with the actress describing her on-screen persona as strong and fiery and someone who “likes that power”; the character’s gender was swapped from the comics.

Touting a stellar ensemble cast including Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and Carrie-Anne Moss, the 2006 indie romantic dramedy Snow Cake features the late Harry Potter star as ex-convict Alex Hughes, who embarks on a journey of self-forgiveness after he is involved in a fatal car crash that kills his hitchhiker passenger. Alex sets out to let the girl’s autistic mother Linda (Weaver) know about her daughter’s passing, and strikes up an unlikely romance with the woman’s kind-hearted neighbor Maggie (Moss). Snow Cake earned Moss the Genie Award for Best Supporting Actress, and her endearing on-screen chemistry with Rickman was singled out by critics.

In Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated 2000 neo-noir thriller Memento, Guy Pearce is a man suffering from anterograde amnesia who attempts to find the person responsible for his wife’s brutal murder, using polaroids and tattoos as a way to keep track of his memories. In the epic mystery, Carrie-Anne Moss appears as the manipulative Natalie, a bartender who Pearce’s Leonard Shelby meets that harbors a deeply rooted resentment for the struggling man.

The actress won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her devious portrayal, with Nolan declaring that she “added an enormous amount to the role of Natalie that wasn’t on the page.” Memento is widely considered to be one of the esteemed director’s greatest works and is undeniably one of the best films of the 2000s.

Heavily regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, the 1999 big-screen extravaganza The Matrix famously features Keanu Reeves as computer hacker and cyber criminal Neo as he joins a rebellion against a nefarious cyber intelligence and travels to a dangerous underworld. Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss also appear in the blockbuster hit, with the actress becoming a household name with her role as Neo’s love interest and ally Trinity; she underwent three hours of an intensive physical test in order to win the extreme acrobatic role.

The Matrix was lauded for its spectacular visual effects, dynamite performances and innovative action sequences, and helped launch a lucrative and thrilling media franchise. Moss has expressed the overwhelming importance of her role in the franchise for her career, telling the New York Daily News, “The Matrix gave me so many opportunities. Everything I’ve done since then has been because of that experience. It gave me so much.”
